Product Description
Inspired by a solar eclipse, the Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel-Lyte III "Total Eclipse" were originally released for $145 in November, 2012. Sometimes referred to as the Leather Toe GL3, the Total Eclipse are the reverse materials used on RF's previous release, the Leather backs. Using materials that were thicker than his previously released ASICS, Ronnie Fieg wanted the Total Eclipse to be able to withstand a harsh winter in New York. The Total Eclipse GLIII was also the first Ronnie Fieg shoe to introduce the "rope lace" styling where flat, monochromatic laces were replaced with multi-colored, thick, round laces. Rope laces would later become a staple to most Ronnie Fieg Asics releases and would be mirrored by brands throughout the industry. The colors used on the Total Eclipse Gel Lytes were meant to mirror that of an actual eclipse, where although very dark, there is a subtle contrast in rich colors away from the eclipse itself. Fieg accomplished this on the GEL-Lyte 3 by using leather and nubuck as the base while creating the eclipse effect with vibrant red hits underlaying the stripes, on the toe hits, and the laces. Overall, the Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel-Lyte III "Total Eclipse" made a remarkable stride for the sneaker industry and reflected the intended inspiration impeccably.
