More than 250 players suited up for the Seattle SuperSonics from 1967 when the team was first introduced through 2008 when the team left Seattle for Oklahoma City. Gary Payton was one of the best players to ever put on a Sonics uniform, and the Nike Zoom GP Sonics was designed to pay tribute to him.
This Nike Zoom GP sneaker featured a leather and suede upper covered in the Team Crimson and Cosmic Bonsai colors used on the Sonics uniforms in the mid-1990s. The sneaker also had a signature clip on the front inspired by the clips used on ski boots and used to honor Payton's status as a "lockdown" defender during his NBA days. There was a pop of yellow outlining the Swoosh on the upper, too, that complemented the yellow utilized on a portion of the outsole.
In our expert opinion, the best part about this sneaker was that it served as a reminder of just how great a player Payton was. This is sometimes overlooked in NBA circles since Seattle no longer has an NBA team. The Nike Zoom GP Sonics was released on May 18, 2019, and retailed for $160.
